Hairy and Getting Hairier

The adventures in full body hairing continue.

I wish I could say he is progressing this far on both sides, but it’s just the one. I was previously doing both sides at the same time but I needed some assurance that this was actually working, so I started to concentrate on one side so I could actually see some results. So there’s still a long way to go, but at least I can sort of see where I’m going now!

Full Body Hairing Begins

This strange creature has been sitting on the table all week, begging me to get back to work on him.

Yes! I have finally begun my first full body hairing following the great tutorial by Maren of Ivorytower Stables. He’s so silly right now with his untamed leg warmers- it reminds me of this cutie:

But now it’s the weekend so I’ll be back to work on hairing. More pictures and step by step to come.

Full Body Hairing Prep

I’m excited to announce that I have gathered the materials for doing a full body hairing, following Ivorytower Stable’s excellent tutorials (parts 1 and 2). I chose a Safari Shetland Pony for my horse and a friend gifted me with some black, brown, and white yarn left over from crocheting, appropriately, a bay horse. I didn’t really want to invest $15 in three colors of yarn for a first attempt, and luckily I have crafty and generous friends.

…or something like that.

Yesterday I worked on removing the plastic mane and tail and fixing a few mold flaws.

Here he is with his new fetlocks and mouth, new wire tail, and general readiness to paint. He looks pretty rough, but it will be mostly covered up.

And today I gave him a basic paint job. It feels strange to be doing details like eyes on a horse with such a rough coat, but I have to remember that it will be covered with hair. But I do need to do all the painting detail that I’ll want on the parts that will show- hooves and eyes.

And here he is with most of his paint on

Tomorrow I’ll hopefully do some hoof details and gloss his eyes. Then he’ll relax nakedly on the shelf while I have a busy weekend, and we’ll see about giving him some hair next week.

Full Body Hairing Tutorial on Ivorytower Stable’s Blog

I have been waiting excitedly for Maren of Ivortytower Stable to do her tutorial on full body hairing. She has many wonderful customs done this way like this unbelievably adorable pony, Ymir:

And today she has posted the tutorial, in two parts: here and here. She has graciously posted these detailed tutorials in English, too!

Now I just have to acquire the proper pony body and some hair and glue and the fun shall begin! I want to use a Schleich or Safari body for the larger size, but I can’t decide because there are so many good ones. How will I ever decide?

While I was looking at those I also found two things I really want: a Safari brand fairy riding a snail and a Schleich Pony Carriage that would fit my CM pony Fritz.

It’s funny to be thinking about starting this project when I am very much in the awkward middle of turning a SM Highland Pony into a hairy beast, only with epoxy. And alas I haven’t put any time into him recently. Maybe tomorrow…
